Euro 2012 Group Winners and Runners-up

Group A: This group was pretty much a scramble and the two teams that came out on top didn’t even have a positive goal differential. This group was easily the weakest of the four groups and didn’t feature as many stars as the other groups did. Both the Czech Republic and Greece are staring down two of the top teams in the world and the two top teams in the “Group of Fluff” are finally going to face elite competition.

Group B: This tournament’s group of death.

Germany. Honestly, there is no surprise here that the Germans won the group and all three of their matches. Although they won all three matches by a total of three goals the Germans never looked like they were in any real danger of losing a match. Mario Gomez scored three goals over a three game span, practically winning two games himself for the Germans. They really took the Netherlands out of the Euro; they never really recovered from that loss despite having a group of stars that were capable of advancing in this group. Up next the Germans get the Greeks which appear to be a very favorable matchup.

Portugal. Portugal has been known somewhat as underachievers in the past due to their amount of talent and lack of execution. They have two of the best wing players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani and solid midfielders like Raul Meireles and Joao Moutinho. Finally, they seem to be putting it together and Cristiano Ronaldo single handedly took care of the Netherlands in the final match of Group B. With a relatively easy match with the Czech Republic on Thursday, the Portuguese should be looking at a semifinal matchup with Spain if all goes according to plan.

Group C:

Spain. Spain was the heavy favorite to win this group and a favorite to win the tournament. Nothing has happened to change that. An unusual set of players were sent out in game 1 against Italy, 6 midfielders (center midfielders at that) and 4 defenders. They still managed a draw with Italians, who are good but not great as it years past. They returned to form dominating Ireland and narrowly beating a tough Croatian team. The Spaniards get the French in the quarterfinals and should win this game but the French have a few stars that can propel them to victory if all falls into place. They still look like the favorite on their side of the bracket in the knockout round but showed sign of vulnerability against Italy that a better team might be able to exploit.

Italy. As for the Italians they move into the knockout stage after a disappointing showing at the 2010 world cup. They had a real chance to beat the Spaniards but the reckless play of Mario Balotelli once again cost the Italians the game. On a 1-on-1 situation Balotelli took too much time against Spanish Goalkeeper Iker Casillas and let defender Sergio Ramos catch up and take the ball away before Balotelli was able to get a shot off. The Italians did do just enough to hold of Croatia and advance to the knockout round, where they will face an England team that won their group and have back their super star Wayne Rooney.

Group D:

England. For all the doubters of England, the 3 Lions won group D despite having Wayne Rooney available for one game. England is mostly in a rebuilding stage with a lot of young players. The very few veterans like Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard (who isn’t playing in the Euro’s due to injury) are on their final tour of duty for the lions.  Youngsters like Danny Welback, Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott have come up big for England. The future for England looks bright despite missing good young players like Chris Smalling and Daniel Sturridge. With a header by Wanye Rooney and a little help from the officials England won the group and get a matchup with the Italians which is more favorable than facing the Spanish.

France. France also advances to the next round coming back from the complete debacle that happened in the 2010 World Cup. If you don’t remember the entire French team gave up on their coach and pretty much refused to give any effort at all. However, the French seemed to be revived led by Franck Ribery and have dynamic players such as Karim Benzema and Samir Nasri. Despite losing their 3rd game of group play, they have put up solid efforts and have been very competitive. The bad news is they get a hungry Spanish team seeking their 3rd straight major championship.

One Game Away from Immortality

I know this blog should have been written about a month ago, but honestly I didn’t want to jinx it but here we stand with tomorrow potentially the greatest day in LA hockey history. Now some people say wait the Ducks won the Stanley Cup a few years ago. That is true but the Ducks 2007 run didn’t have the story line nor did have the support of many Angelinos. Not to discount the Ducks win cause a championship is a championship but living in Southern California the run of the Kings is more majestic no pun intended.

In 2005 there was a strike which caused the cancellation of the NHL season many fans especially in the northern United States and Canada were disappointed. For cities like Los Angeles it wasn’t missed as much because there was Lakers’ basketball and many people just went on with their lives. Since we don’t get very cold weather in LA we don’t connect with hockey like other cities do. There are not very many hockey rinks in the area, mainly because there is not a high demand for any. Plus, the reality of it is hockey equipment is rather expensive so parents choose to put their kids in sports like basketball which is less of a cost then hockey, even baseball would be less expensive.

In 1993, I could remember that the Kings were led to the Stanley Cup finals by Wayne Gretzky. I know that they lost, but at the time it wasn’t so disappointing. As I grew older and seen many season where the Kings were not a very good team, it seem like that previous run was taken for granted. I’ve never claimed to be the biggest Kings fan, nor the biggest hockey fan, but I do watch the Kings on TV from time to time and would say they are my team. I have really grown to appreciate Hockey over the last five years or so, and can watch it a lot more now than I could before.

The Kings are an amazing team that is having a crazy season. An in-season coaching change and a mid-season trade to bring in a new center resulted in the Kings making the playoffs as the 8-seed. 8-seeds are pretty much a non factor in most playoff series’. However, the Kings did not get the memo and eliminated the top-3 seeds in the Western Conference and hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals over the New Jersey Devils. Led by Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar, Jeff Carter, and the outstanding goaltending of Jonathan Quick, the Kings are one game away from brining a spring victory parade to LA that for the first time doesn’t involve the Lakers. All I can say is: Go Kings Go!

Avengers Assemble

Sure the picture above is hilarious, I admit I couldn’t stop laughing when I seen it. However, the reality is that the Lakers are going to need an Avengers type effort to win this series against Oklahoma City. The Thunder are a young and well-rested after disposing of the reigning champion Dallas Mavericks in four games in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.  The Lakers are a veteran team that has just been tested in seven games against a Denver Nugget team that is nowhere near as good as the Thunder. Sure, a lot of it could be blamed on Andrew Bynum for opening his mouth and embarrassing the Laker organization and giving life to the Nuggets.

Back in 2010 the Lakers got a scare from the heavily under dogged Thunder, those who know basketball knew that with some experience this team would be very dangerous. With the emergence of Kevin Durant as one of the best if not the best player in basketball, Russell Westbrook is easily one of the top-5 point guards in the league and, James Harden is reaching new heights as a scorer and has become the best 6th man in the league. That combined with the great coaching by Scott Brooks and toughness inside with Serge Ibaka and Kendrick Perkins has made the Thunder the favorites in the Western Conference.

The Lakers are a shell of their former selves they aren’t really deep off the bench, Kobe has lost a step and a half maybe even two, Pau is a big softie again, Ron Artest and Metta World Peace can’t decide who they want to be and,  Bynum has become an embarrassment by his words and actions. Despite Kobe putting up performances that would still put him as a top-5 player in the NBA at age 33; it’s not enough for him to just throw the Lakers on his back as in years past. They are by far one of the slower teams in the league and one of the worst 3-point shooting teams. Analysts say the Lakers always have an advantage with Gasol and Bynum inside, but what good is having two big men that are inconsistent  in their play. One is a softie and the other is a head case. They have no focus and get bullied and out hustled by smaller and/or less talented players as seen in the Denver Series.

As a Laker fan who has seen Kobe Bryant do anything and everything for the Laker organization in the last eight years or so, I will never count out a team with him on it. But the reality is this series isn’t going to be easy, but it can be won if everything aligns for the Lakers. If the Lakers win this series it will take them at least six games, but if they implode like they did against the Mavericks last year it can be easily over in four. If the latter were to come about I don’t see Mike Brown coming back as Laker Head Coach and no matter what happens I do see Andrew Bynum being traded in the off-season. Let him become someone else’s problem. Game one is tonight in OKC, cross your fingers Laker fans.

Superstar? Not quite yet

In playoff basketball most teams lean on their superstar players to have extraordinary performances and usually propels them into legendary status because guys who don’t perform in the post season just aren’t looked at in the same light. Example Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kobe, Russell, Kareem, etc… compared to Malone, Barkley and LeBron. Something about the ring brings this aura of greatness that can never be taken away. Now before I get caught up on that subject the reason I bring up this topic is because one player are saying is the future of the NBA in my opinion is hurting his team more than he is helping them and that guy is Blake Griffin.

Many NBA analysts talk about how great Griffin is but in this stage of his career he is really one dimensional basically he can dunk in a very entertaining fashion and block shots on the weak side defensively. He can’t make a jumper at the free-throw line like most power forwards, his free throw shooting is horrible and he really doesn’t have a post game. Defensively he cannot defend in the post or off the ball. I am not picking on Griffin for pure dislike but I am merely questioning the analysts that say he is one of the top-10 players in the NBA. Right now is he really that much better than Clipper Center DeAndre Jordan who pretty much has the same pros and cons as Griffin. Sure, he is an all-star but the all-star game is purely a popularity contest.

As seen in the Memphis series Kenyon Martin was more effective in the series in my opinion than Griffin. His defensive effort was a lot better and he really cleaned up around the basket. To make Chris Paul the most effective one of your big man has to hit the jumper off a pick and roll. Right now, neither Griffin or Jordan can do that. Until then I don’t see the Clippers advancing past the first round this year or any year after. I really hope I am proven wrong because I admire players that work hard to correct the flaws in their game. As fans we love to see acrobatic dunks but post season basketball is a lot different, the tempo is slower, more defensive is played and harder fouls are given. In Griffin’s case I think a post game and jumper are definitely on the list to work on for next season because I don’t think the Clippers can overcome the Spurs in a seven game series. I really hope they do though because my mom, a long-time Clipper fan has waited years for this.

2-Minute Heartbreak

Leading into Sunday’s fixture between Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers all seemed to be but a formality for City as they boasted the EPL’s best home record versus a QPR team that had the worst road record in the EPL. Everyone figured City would have their way with QPR and they would have kept rival Manchester United from winning their 20th EPL title and City’s first in 44 years. But QPR had other plans considering a loss or draw and a win from Blackburn Rovers would have them relegated after only one season in the EPL.

In a tied game in the 55th minute Joey Barton threw a Ron Artest like elbow that sent Carlos Tevez to the ground and was given a red card. Upon his exit he gave Kun Aguero a muay-thai knee to the hamstring and started a shoving match with Mario Balotelli. QPR would be down to 10-men and it seemed only a matter of time before City went in for the kill. However, that was not the case after some excellent defending QPR in the 66th minute went on a break and scored a goal on a header by Jamie Mackie to go up 2-1. With United up 1-0 against Sunderland it seemed like Sir Alex Ferguson was all but guaranteed his 20th EPL title.

At the 70th minute Roberto Mancini brought in more fire power by bringing in the tall striker Edin Dzeko followed by the rebellious Mario Balotelli in the 75th. Desperate to score, City had many close calls and as the 90th minute approached the best news City heard was that there was five minutes of stoppage time. City fans were in shock and some in tears as what appeared to be the most glorious day in years was about to go down in flames. Then in the second minute of stoppage time Dzeko headed in a goal off a corner to give City fans life, no less than two minutes later a Aguero got into the box firing a goal passed the QPR keeper sealing the victory for City and leaving both QPR and United stunned.

How to Lose Your Swag in 15 minutes

Heading in to this year’s playoffs the team no one wanted to play in the first round was the Memphis Grizzlies. Now a little over a week into the playoff the Grizzlies find themselves down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Clippers. Not to discount the Clippers effort on the court which has earned them almost every hustle play in the series, but they are playing a team that has lost every ounce of swag they had.

In game 1 the Grizzlies started off hot and pretty much closed the book midway thru the third quarter but no one told the Clippers the game was over. The Clippers were down as many as 27 points and rallied back to win the game. However, I don’t think the Clipper defensive effort was as amazing as the Grizzlies offensive effort was lousy. Tony Allen was shooting air-ball 3-pointers and Zach Randolph was going up weak and off-balance inside when he is known for banging inside the paint. In game 2 the Grizzlies were able to save face by at least splitting their first 2 home games guaranteeing them at least a game 5 at home.

Games 3 and 4 were both close but it was clearly evident that when the Grizzlies were able to tie the game or take a slight lead, they would give the game right back up. For a team that no one wanted to play, the Grizzlies are one game away from an early exit from the playoffs. Losing a 27-point lead at home is definitely a swag killer. The Clippers who still may need some experience are no joke; they are deep and have a nice mixture of young players and veterans. If Memphis wants to have a chance they have to be dominant inside with Randolph and Marc Gasol, and leave Rudy Gay in isolation plays especially against smaller defenders. I don’t think Memphis has enough left in the tank to overcome this deficit, the Clippers are the only team besides the Thunder that really matched up well with Grizzlies. I think the San Antonio Spurs are breathing a huge sigh of relief after losing to the Grizzlies in the first round of last year’s playoffs

A Tale of Two Teams

In American sports we all love to see upsets, underdogs are rooted for all the time cause we love the excitement of seeing drama happen. However, maybe the biggest upset of the year didn’t happen where it usually does the NCAA basketball tournament or in a combat sport. Rather it happened on the pitch, those unfamiliar with soccer the pitch is the field. Barcelona has been one of if not the most dominant soccer teams in the last few years and they were practically a shoe in to win their second consecutive Champion’s League title. However, Chelsea, who is not usually one to be called an underdog, had something to say about it.

Barcelona play in La Liga which it the premier league in Spain, and basically every year the winner is either Barcelona or Real Madrid. Since 1996 only 3 times have Barca or Madrid not been champions, Real Madrid has won the league 32 times to Barcelona’s 21. Barcelona always try to compete for three different titles known as the treble (Champions league, La Liga and the Copa del Rey).  With eight Spanish national players on their squad, Barcelona have a lot of chemistry on their team and had a world class manager in Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea on the other hand have had major problems since the second half of last season’s Barclay’s premier league. They spent 50 million Euro’s on Fernando Torres who has been a complete disaster by scoring 7 goals in one and a half years as a Chelsea striker. Off to a lackluster start they fired Andres Villas-Boas half way thru the season and are guaranteed not to return to the Champions League next year Chelsea was in disarray. The only glimmer of hope left was in the Champions League this year but they drew Barcelona in the semi-final which was almost chalked up as a loss.

In the first leg at Stamford bridge Chelsea won on a goal from Didier Drogba and a defensive effort that saw all 11 men battling in the box to prevent a Barca goal. At Camp Nou it appeared Barca was going to kick it in gear and have their way with Chelsea after taking a 2-0(2-1agg) lead and a red card on Chelsea defender John Terry would give them a man advantage. Then Ramires in stoppage time of the first half gave Chelsea the away goal advantage on a chip goal over Victor Vades. However Barca remained aggressive and were poised for another goal until Petr Cech cleared a ball to a wide open Torres who scored a breakaway goal to put the game out of reach in the 90th minute.  Barca had been eliminated from the prestigious Champion’s League and a week later Real Madrid clinched the La Liga title.

In a season full of mishaps, Chelsea has a chance to win the most coveted title in all of soccer. However they must do it against a very talented Bayern Munich team in Bayern’s own backyard. They also must do it without key players like Terry, Raul Meireles, Ivanovic and Ramires. It will be a tall task but since the win against Barca, Torres has scored three goals and the confidence of a team that had beat the unbeatable team is a factor that no one can discount and should make for an interesting game.

2012 AL Outlook

AL Division Contenders

East

Yankees – You can never pick against the Yanks since the late 90’s but I don’t think theyre balanced enough to get it done this season. Offensively, there is no question that they are still a juggernaut despite the aging Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Pitching, well that’s a whole other story the rotation outside of Sabathia is average at best and the bullpen is lackluster especially with Rivera getting another year older.

Red Sox – It seems they have become the Yankees, spending frivolously on players that haven’t lived up to the hype (Adrian Gonzalez the exception).Injuries have the team off to a rough start and some of the guys don’t seem to eager to play for new manager Bobby Valentine. Once the team is back to full strength they should start to roll but I don’t see them doing enough to contend for the World Series

Rays – Call me bias cause Evan Longoria went to Long Beach St. but I love to watch this team. To me they’re like the Oklahoma City Thunder of MLB, a lot of good young players who are unselfish and a coach that keeps them grounded. Bringing Carlos Pena was huge because he is the perfect cleanup hitter for that lineup. Rotation is once again solid and rookie Matt Moore will be fun to watch. The downside for this team is can the beat the teams they’re supposed to beat cause everyone knows they can beat the Yanks and Sox.

Central

Tigers – This division is the Tigers to lose, the best pitcher in the game, who’s record is good enough for two starters on most teams, and the best 3-4 hitters in the game. I don’t think anyone in the division will catch them. Their playoff success will depend on how many times they can get Verlander to pitch in the series or how many games the other starters can win to not overuse Verlander.

West

Angels – Solid all-around team, although a few things still worry me from giving them the AL. First the top of the lineup of Aybar and Kendrick isn’t anything to get super excited about. Second, the trio of Pujols, Morales, and Trumbo have to be in the lineup every day. This trio is too valuable to give up playing time to Bobby Abreu and Vernon Wells. Lastly, the bullpen is made up of a lot of journeyman and an unproven closer so to me they’re a question mark. Playoffs almost a guarantee, winning the division is a maybe unless they gel very quickly.

Rangers – The back to back AL champs are back and once again they are minus their ace from the previous season. However the pitching staff is solid with Lewis, Harrison and Holland; the question marks Yu Darvish (Is he legit? Or a overpaid export?) and Netali Feliz (Is he just a closer? Or can he go six-strong every time out?), can make or break this team. Fewer holes may be just enough to hold off the halos, at least this season.

My Journey Through Beach Basketball

I know this one is a little late but I have been very busy, but didn’t want to forget it.

For anyone of you that didn’t know I am a graduate of California State University Long Beach aka Long Beach State.

In 2006 I took my younger cousin to watch his first college basketball game at the Anaheim Convention center; it was the Big West Tournament Semi-final. In a back and forth battle Long Beach State beat UC Irvine on a last second shot by Aaron Nixon to send the 49ers to the conference final. The crowd stormed the court, players were losing shoes, and it was pure pandemonium. The next day the 49ers were defeated by the Pacific Tigers in a game where the 49ers were overmatched in the second half. My friends Greg and Kael joined me as we watched in disbelief that such a great day before could turn into heartbreak the next.

In 2007 I was on hand to watch the conference final between the 49ers and the Mustangs of Cal Poly SLO.  The 49ers were down five at the half and it seemed like heartbreak was about to fill the hearts of the 49er faithful. Nixon and Kejuan Johnson led the 49ers on a second half breakout in which they outscored the Mustangs by almost 20 points in the second half. This year it was different there was no doubt that the 49ers headed to the “big dance”. They easily won the game and by the two-minute mark the crowd was ready to storm the court. As the buzzer sounded it seemed as if everyone who bled black and gold were in a huge embrace, nothing an no one could take that moment from us, well at least until the following Thursday. That Thursday the Tennessee Volunteers ended the 49ers season with a 35-point blowout in the first round of NCAA tournament. We were clearly outmatched we lacked size, depth, and athleticism; everyone said we didn’t stand a chance but we would never bet against our 49ers and this time we came up short.

In 2009 I went to my last game at The Pyramid and it was a packed house because we were palying one of our rivals Cal State Fullerton and it was Greek night and it seemed all of my friends were Greeks except Greg who joined me in the non-Greek section. We lost a back and forth game but we seen three bright spots, three freshmen: Casper Ware, Larry Anderson and T.J. Robinson. We were excited because we finally had a coach who had success in the NCAA tournament with mid-major schools and this was pretty much his first recruiting class. That night after the game Greg and I knew these guys would be great when they became seniors.

Fast forward to late 2011, after being defeated by UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Tournament two years in a row, the 49ers were about to start their season. When I seen the schedule I thought Dan Monson was crazy. A small school like us going on the road to play Pittsburgh, Kansas, Louisville, North Carolina, Xavier and San Diego St. After seeing the results of those games they beat Pitt and Xavier while they were ranked in the top-15 and played North Carolina and Kansas down to the wire and two of the toughest places to play in the country. I had a feeling this season was going to be special, and after a 15-0 start to the season I knew that feeling was becoming reality.

March 2012 I decide to go with my girlfriend to see the 49ers make a bid for an undefeated run in conference play against her alma mater Cal State Fullerton. Compared to The Pyramid this place looked like a high school gym and even the mascot looked like it needed a makeover. So the game was tight all the way thru the half and the 49ers don’t look like the guys who were hanging in there with giants of the NCAA. Midway through the second half we lost our best defender Larry Anderson to a knee injury and Casper Ware was jacking up off balance three pointers instead of driving the lane and getting an easy two driving the lane. We eventually lost and it was devastating because this team was way more talented than that of the 2007 team. But if there was ever such thing as a good loss, this was it.

One week later my girlfriend rejoined me for the Big West tournament final the 49ers against the UCSB Gauchos, the team that beat the 49ers two straight years in the conference final. Her Titans had been ousted earlier in the weak by UCI and I think she wouldn’t want anything else but a 49er win. The tournament had been moved to the Honda Center the previous year and it just had a different feel because the Convention center was super small and very intimate. However, I was shocked to see so many people there to support the 49ers. After a tight game in the first half the 49ers went on a 3-point barrage mostly by Ware who was taking higher percentage shots than he did the previous week. At about the 4-minute mark we knew the game was in hand and at the final buzzer we stormed the court and ended up on ESPN 2. It felt more special than it did 2007 because the 49ers struggled so hard to get over the hump and to do it for the seniors in the final Big West Tournament game of their career was truly amazing.

Last week there was a confidence going into the first round game of the NCAA tournament that 49ers didn’t feel in 2007. We knew that the 49ers had arrived and college basketball analysts were picking them not only to win their first game but to advance to the sweet 16. Even Digger Phelps of ESPN was calling the 49ers his team. This game wasn’t going to be easy the Lobos of New Mexico were also one of the hottest teams in the country and had a killer run to win the Mountain West Conference Tournament. The game was tight all the way thru and neither team was giving the other an inch. Larry Anderson attempted to play and played well but it was evident he wasn’t the same player he was earlier in the year. Despite Ware not being able to find the mark on most of his shots the 49ers hung in until the last few minutes when New Mexico began to pull away and eventually win the game.

Sure this season didn’t end the way the 49ers wanted it to, there is still no reason to see this season as a failure. The moral victories learned this season were enough to last a lifetime and the 49er faithful were more than proud of their boys. It was an amazing run for this group of guys who most of seen develop along the way and for coach Monson to see his first recruiting class complete their career under his tutelage. Hopefully Monson can keep bringing good talent to The Beach. GO BEACH!

Elway’s Experiment

John Elway has finally got his cake and if all goes to plan will be able to eat it too. Unless you are a football fan that has been hiding under a rock, then you already know what I am talking about. Not only has Elway got rid of Tim Tebow but he has replaced him with the best regular season quarterback probably in NFL history, Peyton Manning. Pictures of Elway that have been all over ESPN.com this week have all had Elway grinning from ear to ear like he pulled off the biggest free agency heist in NFL history, or did he?

It is no secret that Elway never liked Tebow no matter how much he claimed that he did. But what was it because Tebow was a bad football player? Or was it because Tebow isn’t the conventional quarterback that Manning is and Elway was? Tebow led the Denver Broncos into the playoffs after a very slow start last year and although he didn’t put up the numbers of a Drew Brees, Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers, he still found a way to make the plays needed to win. Sure Tebow may not be the best quarterback in the league, we have seen worse (google Jamarcus Russell).  He is a great football player and is motivated to win and will do whatever it takes to win legally (sorry New Orleans Saints).

Now getting Peyton Manning isn’t necessarily what it is all cracked up to be unless Manning is healthy. If you were to tell me you were getting a 35-year-old Peyton Manning, that’s fine. However, telling me you are getting a 35-year-old Manning that just missed all of last season because of a neck injury that could have potentially ended his career and to pay him $19.5million per year, sounds like a huge risk to me. No one knows the strength of that neck for sure and the AFC West is full of defensive linemen who are not afraid to hit a quarterback after the whistle. So at most I call the Manning an experiment and not necessarily a lock.
